Pompeii takes two to three hours minimum to do justice to its scale — the site covers over 40 hectares. Herculaneum can be thoroughly covered in 90 minutes to two hours.
Herculaneum's pyroclastic burial preserved carbonised organic materials — wood, food, cloth — that Pompeii's ash burial did not. The House of the Neptune Mosaic, the carbonised wooden furniture and the wine bar with its original counter are extraordinary.
Both are reachable from Naples by Circumvesuviana train or organised excursion. Herculaneum is slightly closer to Naples; Pompeii is the Circumvesuviana's better-known stop.
Editorial verdict
Choose Pompeii for scale, drama and the most famous individual sites. Choose Herculaneum for intimate preservation, shorter walking distances and a less crowded atmosphere. On a long port call, combining both with Vesuvius above is one of the finest full days in the region.
